UNILAG Faculty of Engineering gets new Dean

 

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Oluwatoyin T. Ogundipe, FAS, has approved the appointment of Engr. Prof. Obanishola Sadiq as the new Dean of the Faculty of Engineering of University of Lagos.

Prof Sadiq was born in Lagos to the Sadiq’s ruling house of Ajagonnobe- Epe, in Epe Local Government Area of Lagos State. He obtained M.Sc in Civil Engineering(1985) and Ph.D in Structural Engineering(1990) both from the Kiev’s Institute of Civil Engineering, Kiev, Ukraine(formerly USSR).

He began his academic career as Lecturer 1 in 1991 at ABU, Zaria in the Department of Civil Engineering. He was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 1994. In 1995 he transferred his services to the Civil Engineering Department at University of Lagos(UNILAG). He rose through the ranks to become Associate Professor (2000) and Professor (2001).

At UNILAG, he was Sub-Dean, Faculty of Engineering (1999-2001); Head, Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering (2011-2014). He has also served as member and Chairman of several UNILAG major committees: he was Chairman Minor Contracts, Facilities & Projects Committee (2005-2008); Chairman Environmental & Beautification Committee (2006-2008); Chairman Examination Malpractice Committee for Faculty of Science (2010-2015). As Head of Civil & Environmental Engineering Department, he facilitated donation of Computer Laboratory to the department by DELTA AFRIQUE with supply of 25 new computers and civil engineering design soft wares for the training of civil engineering students, all to the tune of about Forty Million Naira.

In 2001, Prof. Sadiq was appointed Acting Deputy Director of Works & Services of UNILAG and in August 2002 he was appointed Acting Director Works & Services of the University. In that capacity he oversaw the maintenance of Civil, Electrical, Mechanical and Telecommunication Engineering Infrastructure throughout the University. Indeed, he was responsible for the maintenance of over 20 academic and administrative buildings; almost 300 residential staff quarters on campus and about 200 leased staff quarters off campus; 14 students’ hostels and about 35 kilometres of roads and drives. His annual operating budget was over 300 Million Naira.

In academics, his major area of research is Nonlinear Structural Stability and Vibration Analysis of Shells and Spatial Structures. To date he has supervised to completion 5 Ph.D candidates, over 160 M.Sc candidates. Currently, he supervises 6 M.Phil./Ph.D and about 15 M.Sc candidates. He has over 50 publications in reputable national and international journals and referred conference proceedings. He was visiting Professor on sabbatical leave to FUNAAB(2008/2009) and LASU, Epe Campus(2016/2017) academic sessions.

Prof Sadiq is a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers(FNSE); Fellow of the Nigerian Institution of Structural Engineers (FNIStructE); Member of the International Association for Shell & Spatial Structures(M.IASS) and a COREN registered Civil Engineer. He has served as member of NUC and COREN accreditation panels to several Universities across the country.

He is recipient of the NSE Lagos Branch Distinguished Merit Award (2006) and NIStructE Lagos Branch Merit Award (2017) for his contribution to knowledge and engineering practice. He is also recipient of the Faculty Best Researcher’s award for year 2006 Research Conference & Fair, UNILAG.

Engr. Prof Sadiq is happily married to Mrs. Aladi Gloria Sadiq and they are blessed with two boys.
