The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Rahamon Bello FNSChE, FNSE, FAEng, former Vice Chancellor, Prof. Oyewusi lbidapo-Obe, the 1st National Vice President, Unilag Alumni Association, Otunba (Engr.) Seni Adetu, our Lecturer of today, Engr. Charles Adekunle Aladewolu FNSE, Dean of Faculty of Engineering and our host today, Prof. Funso Falade and other distinguished Alumni here present, it brings me great pleasure to welcome you all to this momentous occasion and to inaugurate the University of Lagos, Faculty of Engineering Alumni Chapter. I heartily congratulate the Faculty of Engineering and indeed the University of Lagos, on this landmark and stand here before you a very proud Alumni Association President, delighted by the inspiration that has gone into the creation of this group and proud to associate with the synergy that has brought us here to-day to commemorate the formation of the Engineering Alumni Chapter. Permit me to start by sharing an Aesop’s fable on invention. lt is the story of a crow and a pitcher. A thirsty crow found a pitcher containing some water, albeit too little and low to reach.
As it seemed she would die within sight of the remedy, the crow struck upon an idea to drop pebbles into the pitcher. The water level rose and the crow was able to drink, and quench her thirst. This is the essence of Engineering and of the Engineer’s mind. lt is a field that continuously asks – how can I make this work, for me and for us all? lt persistently probes – how can I use the resources at my disposal to invent, innovate, design, build, maintain, research, and improve structures, machines, tools, systems, components, materials, processes, solutions, and organizations. And it is the story of the thought process of the Engineer within each of us. I am happy with the Faculty of Engineering Alumni Chapter’s website
http://www.unilagfeaa.com/ and l trust that the medium will attract our Engineering Alumni from far and wide, towards the fulfilment of the ideals for which it was created.
I applaud the various Engineering Sets, particularly the Set of 69.72, who have and continue to give back to the cause of their Faculty and our Alma Mater at large. We sincerely appreciate your interest and leadership. Like it has been said, nature has its way of repaying your good deeds and I am certain you will not miss your reward.
I implore you all to see today as a stepping stone to be more active in the National body and bring your good will to bear in its activities. The potentials of the larger Alumni as a Body are boundless, especially at this time in our Nation. We cannot afford not to take up the opportunity to realize these potentials. Our vision as a National Body, is to be the most celebrated Alumni in all of Africa by year 2026 and our mission which will help us get there is to assist the University in whatever way possible, in its development and in its drive to establish and maintain a tradition of excellence in all its endeavours, hence our clarion call for your involvement.
ln closing, I hereby inaugurate the University of Lagos, Faculty of Engineering Alumni Chapter, as I urge other Faculties who are yet to, to borrow a leaf from this Faculty, and build on your collaborations in such a way that we become the most admired Alumni in all of Africa. Once again, to the Faculty of Engineer-ing, its Alumni Chapter and all stakeholders in this exploit, accept my congratulations and I trust with this milestone, the years to come will push us into further glory.
The Olor’ogun Dr. Sonny Kuku OFR, FAS
National President, Unilag Alumni Association
