January 23, 2026 By Sola Aina In Celebrating Excellence The University of Lagos Faculty of Engineering Alumni Association (UNILAGFEAA) proudly celebrates a landmark moment of academic excellence and mentorship at the 56th University of Lagos Convocation Ceremony (January 2026). At the heart of this recognition is Prof. Obanishola M. Sadiq, who was awarded the Prof. Ayo Ogunye Prize for the Best PhD Thesis Supervisor (2024/2025 Academic Session)—a prestigious honour that underscores the value of rigorous supervision, sustained scholarship, and the patient work of building world-class researchers. This award aligns with the outstanding doctoral achievement of Dr. Abubakar Haruna Egbunu (PhD, Civil & Environmental Engineering – Structures Option), whose work earned the distinction of Best PhD Thesis in Sciences. His thesis, focused on advanced modelling and analysis of multi-walled carbon nanotubes under complex physical forces, represents the kind of frontier research that keeps UNILAG relevant in global scientific conversations. Celebrating Collaborative Mentorship: Congratulations, Dr. Musibau G. Sobamowo! UNILAGFEAA also extends warm congratulations to Dr. Musibau G. Sobamowo (Associate Professor), who served as co-supervisor on the award-winning doctoral research. Beyond his academic contributions, Dr. Sobamowo’s recognition is especially meaningful to us as an alumni community because he is a proud product of the University of Lagos Faculty of Engineering—an alumnus whose journey from UNILAG classrooms to the frontlines of engineering research reflects the very story UNILAGFEAA exists to amplify. His continued commitment to scholarship, supervision, and innovation strengthens the faculty’s research culture and demonstrates what happens when alumni not only succeed, but return value to the ecosystem that shaped them. Saluting a Mentor of Mentors: Prof. Francis Ayo Ogunye, FAEng We also pay special tribute to Prof. Francis Ayo Ogunye, FAEng, for his continued support for Engineering Education, Research & Innovation in Nigeria—and for championing excellence through the establishment and sustenance of this prize. As Prof. Sadiq noted with gratitude: “I sincerely and greatly appreciate our great Mentor in the Faculty of Engineering UNILAG, Professor Francis Ayo Ogunye, FAEng for his continued support for Engineering Education, Research & Innovation in Nigeria… Thank you sir.” Let Us Celebrate Them! UNILAGFEAA congratulates Prof. Obanishola M. Sadiq, Dr. Musibau G. Sobamowo, and Dr. Abubakar Haruna Egbunu on this well-deserved recognition. Your achievements reflect the power of mentorship, collaboration, and excellence, and they inspire current students and younger alumni to aim higher. We celebrate you—and we celebrate the enduring legacy of UNILAG Engineering. Share this content: ← → x ×
