December 24, 2025 By Sola Aina In Professional Affairs The Nigerian engineering profession entered a new leadership phase with the symbolic handover of office to Engr. Ali Alimasuya Rabiu, FNSE, FAEng, MFR, as the 35th President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE). The brief but significant ceremony, held on 18 December 2025 at the National Engineering Centre, Abuja, formally set the stage for a new presidential tenure commencing on 1 January 2026. Presided over by the outgoing President, Engr. Margaret Aina Oguntala, FNSE, the event reflected the long-standing traditions of continuity, institutional stability, and professional collegiality that define the NSE. It was witnessed by past presidents of the Society, senior fellows, branch leaders, and key regulatory stakeholders, including the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN). Engr. Rabiu’s emergence as President comes with a distinguished professional profile. A Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (FNSE) and a Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Engineering (FAEng), he is also a recipient of the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR). These distinctions reflect decades of contribution to engineering practice, professional development, and national service. For the University of Lagos Faculty of Engineering Alumni Association (UNILAGFEAA), the transition is significant beyond personal affiliations. The NSE remains the foremost professional platform shaping engineering standards, ethics, policy engagement, and national discourse. Its leadership direction has direct implications for engineering education, accreditation, professional development, and industry–academia collaboration—areas that align closely with the aspirations of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Lagos. UNILAGFEAA has, over the years, positioned itself as a strategic partner in advancing engineering excellence through infrastructure support, research facilitation, student development, and alumni-led professional engagement. As the NSE enters a new presidential cycle, expectations remain high for deeper collaboration between professional bodies, universities, and alumni associations in addressing Nigeria’s infrastructure, energy, manufacturing, and technology challenges. The forthcoming Investiture Ceremony, scheduled for 17 January 2026 at the Banquet Hall of the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, will provide an opportunity for Engr. Rabiu to formally outline his vision and priorities for the Society. It will also reaffirm the central role of engineers in national development and policy formulation. As a faculty-focused alumni body, UNILAGFEAA welcomes this new chapter in NSE leadership with optimism. Strong, principled, and forward-looking leadership at the national professional level remains critical to nurturing future engineers, strengthening academic–industry linkages, and ensuring that engineering continues to serve as a cornerstone of sustainable national growth. UNILAGFEAA remains committed to supporting professional leadership that strengthens engineering education, practice, and national development. We look forward to sustained collaboration between the Nigerian Society of Engineers, academia, industry, and alumni bodies in advancing excellence within the engineering profession.
