October 1, 2025 By Sola Aina In National Commemoration / Alumni Impact On October 1st, 2025, Nigeria marked 65 years of Independence—a milestone that calls for sober reflection, gratitude, and renewed commitment. From the struggles of our founding fathers to the complex journey of nation-building, Nigeria has endured trials and triumphs alike. In his national address, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu reminded us of the sacrifices of our heroes—Azikiwe, Awolowo, Tafawa Balewa, Ahmadu Bello, Margaret Ekpo, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, and others—who envisioned a Nigeria that would lead Africa and inspire the world. Despite civil wars, economic turbulence, and political crises, Nigeria has shown resilience, recording strides in education, industry, infrastructure, and technology. With 274 universities today compared to just two at Independence, Nigeria has grown into a hub of knowledge and aspiration. Yet challenges remain. Inflation, limited infrastructure, and uneven development continue to test our collective will. As the President noted, “yesterday’s pains are giving way to relief,” as reforms gradually reposition Nigeria for inclusive growth. The UNILAGFEAA Perspective For the University of Lagos Faculty of Engineering Alumni Association (UNILAGFEAA), Nigeria’s 65th anniversary is more than a commemoration—it is a call to action. Alumni are uniquely placed to transform the future by shaping the next generation of engineers, innovators, and leaders. The story of UNILAGFEAA itself embodies Nigeria’s resilience. From the vision of the Class of 1969–72 (ULEC@69.72), who began with modest interventions in laboratories and infrastructure, the Association has grown into a robust body contributing to research, facilities, mentoring, and national discourse. Recent projects include classrooms, laboratories, drainage solutions, and professorial chairs that position UNILAG’s Faculty of Engineering as a centre of excellence. At the 2025 Alumni Retreat in Ijebu-Ode, stakeholders articulated a bold vision: aligning alumni energy with the Faculty’s urgent infrastructural needs—ranging from water systems and restrooms to renewable energy and research equipment. The Board of Trustees further urged endowments, partnerships, and stronger research culture to make the Faculty a pacesetter in Nigeria and Africa. Preserving the Core, Stimulating Progress As Collins and Porras argue in Building Your Company’s Vision, enduring institutions succeed by preserving their core values while stimulating progress. This principle resonates both with Nigeria at 65 and with UNILAGFEAA’s mission. Our core is rooted in loyalty to our alma mater, the pursuit of engineering excellence, and service to society. Progress requires bold, “big hairy audacious goals” (BHAGs)—such as making UNILAG’s Faculty of Engineering Africa’s leader in innovation hubs, renewable energy, and digital transformation. A Shared Destiny As Nigeria celebrates 65 years, UNILAGFEAA reaffirms its commitment to nation-building through education, innovation, and alumni collaboration. We believe that every challenge—whether in infrastructure, funding, or governance—is an opportunity for alumni to lead with vision, mobilize resources, and model integrity. In the words of our Chairman at the Retreat, Engr. Ayotunde Ogunnoiki: “Let us use every opportunity to reflect, strategize, and plan for the betterment of our Association and our Faculty”. Nigeria @65 reminds us that progress depends on collective effort. UNILAGFEAA calls on all alumni to: Engage: Join our programmes, retreats, and mentorship schemes. Give back: Support endowment funds, research, and infrastructure. Innovate: Champion projects that address Nigeria’s real challenges—energy, technology, environment, and manufacturing. Inspire: Be role models for students and young graduates, showing that alumni networks can be catalysts for transformation. Together, as Nigeria charts its next decades, UNILAGFEAA stands ready to contribute—preserving our core values while boldly shaping the future. Happy 65th Independence Anniversary, Nigeria! May our nation thrive, and may UNILAGFEAA continue to be a beacon of engineering excellence and alumni service. Share this content: ← → x ×
